Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Everything you love about iPod just got tinier. iPod mini lets you bring along enough music for a three-day weekend getaway in a package so small you'll forget you're carrying it. Until people ask you about it, that is.

3 out of 5 stars wrong color   December 28, 2008
prodcut was shipped quickly, so quickly they sent the wrong color. I ordered a blue one and they sent me a silver one. But everything seems to be working fine and I didn't feel like sending it back before xmas because it was a present.

5 out of 5 stars So, yeah, hey. Five stars.   December 17, 2008
It's been my experience with Apple products that sometimes -- and this is pretty much impossible to predict -- you'll get a dud that fails in every possible way and frustrates you and ruins your life (in my case, this was the iBook G4), and sometimes you'll get something perfect. Sometimes, you'll get something that works forever without any of the problems that other people have reported with the same model. I was not an early adopter of the iPod mini, but I've had it much longer than, for instance, any laptop or portable CD player I've owned, and I've used it almost every day, and it has never failed. Occasionally, it's run out of power, but the battery, actually -- the battery it came with, which I've never replaced, and I feel like it must have clocked maybe a thousand load-cycles -- is awesome. I'm not even kidding. It's starting to seem supernatural. We're starting to defy all the rules about how batteries are supposed to work. We're starting to defy the laws of physics.

Let me tell you another story about this iPod. Years ago, and more than once, this iPod hung outside the door of my moving car from the cord of the cassette adapter. Can you guess what happened? In a way, the story that I'm telling you now is a ghost story. I stopped the car, opened the door, found the iPod, plugged it back into the cassette adaptor, and went back to business of driving. I went back to the business of enjoying hitch-free music playback. I have had to replace cassette adaptors, but the iPod itself is still going strong.

So, a few months ago, I decided that four gigabytes could no longer be expected to accommodate any kind of cross-section of my 30-gigabyte music library, and I bought the iPod Classic. It kind of sucked, so I returned it. And at this point, with the recent refresh of the iPod line, I feel like I should be eyeing the new nanos with the upgraded capacity, but I can't bring myself to ditch the mini for a player that won't fit all of my music anyway. I've gotten as far as looking at flash cards. I've gotten as far as thinking that I might maybe disassemble the mini, and replace the mini hard drive. Instead of the 4 gigabyte mini hard drive, I'll have a 32 gig flash hard drive. The iPod mini will outlive us all. This one iPod mini will outlive us all.

Maybe you'll get lucky like I got lucky?

5 out of 5 stars Still the one!   November 23, 2008
I have the gorgeous blue, 2nd Generation Ipod Mini. She's sitting right next to me charging. Many warned me when I purchased this unit back in 2005, that the battery would crash and burn. It's now 2008 and she's still running like new. I do not have a need for video, photo uploads, or other unnecessary technological advancements that Apple has to offer for the "new" Ipods. I paid $350.00 new for this Ipod Mini back in 2005, and it was the best $350.00 I've ever spent. I've managed to upload cds, even cracked cds onto this Ipod. Unlike burning cds, it transfers them minus the skipping; so I basically get my cds on here in brand new condition again. Finding parts for my Mini are getting to be a bit of a hassle nowadays, but if I can find universal parts it works well. The only parts I need are cords (if this one breaks, hasn't yet) or the FM Tuner.

Thanks Apple for a great product. Beats the Zune by a mile, without unauthorized credit card charges for the Zune Pass, courtesy of Microsoft.

1 out of 5 stars Apple rips the people off... once again!   February 17, 2008

I swear if I wasn't just getting my newer ipods as hand-me-downs from my brother I would never buy a single ipod ever again. I did buy this mini, and it is just terrible. I take fairly good care of my stuff (about as good as the above average consumer), and this piece of junk has only 2 working buttons after 1.5 years. I really wish electronics would last about 3 years, but with Apple and their line of Ipods, you get about 1 year of decent workability.
Even after a year, the battery charge was terrible, lasting about 3 hours out of the advertised 8. As of now the thing just turns on, last about 40 seconds then the battery dies the second I select a song. When i received a newer ipod from my brother, i didnt even bother keeping my old mini ipod as a portable storage drive, much less a music player, and took a hammer to it. What a piece of junk.
